The Newport International Film Festival is pleased to announce the winners of its 2008 festival. Awards, which are voted on by the NIFF Jury, were presented for the Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary, and Best Short Film.

Every summer starts off with the promise of sun and fun. It may be impossible to guarantee the sun, but the Newport International Film Festival can guarantee the fun. Beginning on Tuesday June 3rd, the 11th annual Newport International Film Festival (NIFF) kicks off with the documentary Man on Wire, which explores high wire artist Philippe Petit's daring high-wire performance between New York City’s World Trade Center’s twin towers in August 1974.

Nick Nolte is a Hollywood actor whose heart seems to be with the underdogs - the independent movies that often turn up at festivals. "Festivals like this are all that's left," Nolte said of the Newport International Film Festival. "It's very hard to get these kinds of films made (in Hollywood). The multiplexes have taken over."

This was a great weekend to be Michael McKean. The Newport International Film Festival honored him with a lifetime achievement award, two of his best friends showed up to celebrate and to rib him a bit and the three filled the Newport Blues Cafe with fans eager to hear music from films such as "This Is Spinal Tap" and "A Mighty Wind."

Steven Feinberg, director of the state's Film and Television Office, exulted on his way out of the Newport Blues Cafe on Saturday, where Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest, stars of "This Is Spinal Tap," had just delighted a packed house. Pumping his fist in the air, Feinberg said, "Now this is a film festival!"
